Honor: A Story from Jordan

In Honor by Elsa Marston, Uncle Nabeel says to Wafa's father, "You’re forgetting your values, the values of our family, our people. Some things must never change."

Explain what values Uncle Nabeel is talking about. What values do Yasmine and her family hold? How do you know? What is the position of the author regarding Uncle Nabeel's values? How do you know? What are your own values regarding the issue of honor killing?

  1. **Uncle Nabeel was talking about many values in the story. He is a prejudiced to his own think and Islam. Uncle Nabeel is a conservative man, who wants to apply the Islam rules in the home without thinking. He is joking and having fun, but he can not be late to punish someone breaks the rules. No one can persuade him or let him back; because he completely believe that he is right. Uncle Nabeel can not forgive someone who made mistakes in the religious issues and he will take his honor.
All of that is appearing in the story of "Honor." He always wanted from Rasheed to take his sister Sawsan to her job and come back for her. When Sawsan had her mistake, the mother and his brother tried to give him solutions to do. He decided that she broke the rules and should be killed. He was thinking of how he can return his honor without discussing the other sides.

**Yasmin and her family where carrying values too, but they were so different than Uncle Nabeel!!
They were democracy, free and peaceful. They can take decision by sharing. They care about the human life even there where a mistake. They can talk more easily and useful. They know the Islam rules and they act with wisdom. The mother was thinking and caring about Sawsan life by writing in journals. The father was worried about what might happen. Yasmine also was terrible about her friend Wafa and her family.

** I guess the author disagree with him. The writer wrote many disadvantages about Uncle Nabeel more than his good beliefs. She might wrote truly what her character is, but I feel that she wrote many bad details about him to let people hate him. He was controller, unfair, complicated, old traditional person and so on. At the end of the story, she didn’t want Sawsan to be killed and I think that this event happened with the writer automatically. She hated the character Nabeel and she didn’t want him to let what he wanted in the story.

** If we want to talk about the issue of killing for honor as Muslims, Christians and all the religions on the world; killing is a crime and the God will punish for that. As Muslims, God says in the holly Quran (ولا تقتلوا النفس التي حرم الله الا بالحق) and that mean, you must not kill people just by the right of doing that. These rights do not include Sawsan situation even is she was adulteress. Wafas family is following the Islam with other rules, but not from the Islam. They make the Islam as a cover to believe their own thoughts. Our God say for example, ولا تقربو الصلاة وانتم سكارى and that means, don’t pray for the god (salat) if you are drunk. Some people take the first part (Don’t pray for God) and they left (when you are drunk. That what happens now days, people take covers to protect their selves. Killing for honor was an old tradition for foolish and uneducated people. We hope people will have more wisdom and to not take religions as masks. I'm not with that sure, because of many reasons and the most important reason is HARAM.

  2. I think uncle Nabeel talked about the value of his family. Which talks about Honer and how to treat the children especially girls. In the story they talk about killing HONER, which they hold. And the values represented in the story by uncle Nabeel, who wanted to kill his daughter because she made un usual thing- in their traditions-. And he don’t want any one to say: "you are wrong"

I think that Yasmeen and her family hold a British values, they were free and democracy, I know that from their talks, and how they behaved after listening to Sawsan's story.

I think that the author is against uncle Nabeel thoughts, and she thinks this is a bad thing; to kill an adult girl for stupid action, which could any girl in her age to do it.

I know that when she discussed that the girl was young, and they wanted her to marry an old man, so she made this reaction to express her feelings.

I think that the man is not the God, who can take the life from any one. So that was wrong reaction.

  3. -On in this story "Honor" talks about Honor Killing. Uncle Nabeel was talking about the values of his family, that he raised on, that values that he took from Islam without thinking of it's real meaning and in which situations could apply.

In addition, he applied Islamic roles from his point of view which he saw right, and he want to kill his daughter because she did something wrong and she must be killed because Sawsan "his daughter" broke one of the values that shouldn't any one broke it, so he put himself as someone how knows the exact Islamic role in situation like this, and he started to say that kill Sawsan is the only way to restore his honor.

-Yasmeen and her family have completely different values from Uncle Nabeels values. They were democracy and free, and I know that from the way of discussion that they had when Yasmeen told them Sawsans story.

-The author strongly disagree with Uncle Nabeels values, I felt that from the way that she presented his ideas, beliefs and handling others.

-My own values of regarding the issue of "Honor Killing", I absolutely disagree with that issue, because this tradition issue and out of Islamic law.

  4. In Honor By Elsa Marston uncle Nabeel mentions to Wafa’s father that he is forgetting his values. In the story uncle Nabeel is talking about the cultural/ religious beliefs, the norm and ideals of their place of origination, which is Beit es-Souf. In the religion of Islam and in Arabic cultural it is known that if a woman breaks the rules with another man she must be punished and killed to regain the honor of the family. It is the father’s responsibility to teach his daughters and authorize his sons to look over them and protect them. In Beit es –Souf , a conservative village that grasps very strongly to these beliefs and do not try to make changes like the cities around them. The honor of a woman is highly important as it affects the whole family and can demolish the families’ reputation in the village. The following values are very different from Yasmines family because they were living in a different environment.
Yasmine’s family grasps values of democracy and focuses on human right. They adopted a western ideology and ways of thinking. Yasmine’s father believes in democracy as it is mentions in the story when Yasmine says he loves to be lathered up about social causes. Her family believes in equal rights for all and freedom as its mentions in the novel. One can also understand that they care for others and do not like to judge people who are different. This is shown when they encourage Yasmine to get to know Wafa. It is evident that the family has a different approach of solving problems and do not impose their ways of thinking or force anything on their children.
The author appears to be against uncle Nabeel’s values because of the way she chose the events in the story. The story was written in two main points of views and both Yasmine and wafa were against uncle Nabeel’s actions. It is self-evident that the author is against his views because she makes Yasmine’s family announce attacking remarks against what he was doing as well as wafa’s father. The author also chooses to end the story with Sawan being saved which sends a message that the problem can be solved with out an honor killing. My values are similar to the author which is being completely against honor killings. I believe that it is a brutal and barbaric way to solve a problem because it elevates the conflict and results in more anguish and suffering for the family. In addition, I believe that it is necessary to grasp on ones values but since we are in a changing society we must find a way to revolve in a better way in the direction of goodness.

  5. Values uncle Nabeel that he as Arabic and Islamic man from Jordan tribe has the honor. But during the story I noticed that he has tough and fanatic values. He was burden on wafaa’s family. For example, he obliged Rasheed to companion his sister when she went and back from her job. Uncle Nabeel considered that his family has tribal values and they must not forget it.
As I think that Yasmine’s family is freedom and democracy. It appeared during this story. for example, when the writer described Yasmine’s mother(smoking cigarettes and colored hair). Furthermore, discussions between Yasmine, her mother and father about her school and classes. In addition to the frankly when yasmine discussed wafaa’s family problem.
The author shows negative regarding to the uncle Nabeel. That appeared by the way that author wrote it especially when uncle Nabeel decided to kill his daughter for knowing that Sawsan was stopping with strange young. I felt that the writer want to show Nabeel thinking was wrong, therefore, she made him think killing and the reason is the honor….
In the end, I think that honor killing is forbidden on my( religion, Society and my mind). But I have condition that if people exceed the red line like fornication, they must face strong punishment. But if its small problem like sawsan problem I refused to solve this problem by killing because we can solve it in logical and suitable solutions.

  6. Uncle Nabeel taked his values from the Koran he follow it and applys it on his family without thinking and getting the exact meaning or refleaction , so he didn't know what's the point .Also he didn't admit anything from the others because he think that he is true because he follows the koran .
Yasmin's family were moslims too and carying the islamic values but they were free , open minded and democracy family .they discused about everything happend in their lives ,her parents cared about sawsan's issue and wrote about it in journals.her mother could help Sawsan by calling a women organizathon which protect her life.
The outher was against Unkcle Nabel's values .I saw that from his position and the way he was acting.
in my point of view the koran forbid the killing for any reason .There is many good ways that Sawsan's family could solve the problem.

  7. Honor Iman Shawqi

Honor is a story from Jordan written by Elsa Marsten. This story contains many values that I will explained. First of all, I will talk about the values that uncle Nabeel is talking about. He is holding religious values . For instance, he will be very unhappy if anyone learn something against the Koran. In addition, he had very simple ideas about the world, and he stuck to whatever the Koran said on almost any subject and the Koran could not be wrong. Finally, he said that the man without his honor is nothing.

Yasmine and her family hold some values that are not exactly a according to Islam. Yasmine dose not wear hejab because she said that being a good person comes from inside you not outside. Her parents is more freely than Nabeels’ family. They were democratic , her mother loved getting lathered up about social causes and her fathers’ import-export business gave him a more or less worldly view of things. Justice, freedom, democracy, equal rights for every body.

In my opinion, honor killing is very important issue and I agree that honor is the most expensive things in the life and person can not live without it.

**Yasmin and her family where carrying values too, but they were so different than Uncle Nabeel’s!!
They were freedom and peaceful. Yasmins family was doing what they want, but sure there was a limit for that. On the other hand, Wafa and her family couldn’t do what they want, for example Wafa didn’t study in a modern school and it was her first time. At the end of the story, they moved Wafa to an Islamic school again, because of Uncle Nabeel decision. They can take decision by sharing. They care about the human life even there where a mistake. They can talk more easily and usefully. They know the Islam rules and they act with wisdom. The mother was thinking and caring about Sawsan life by writing in journals. The father was worried about what might happen. Yasmine also was terrible about her friend Wafa and her family.

  9. He is talking about their social values.
He mean that his brother (wafa's father)leave the value because he is living in Amman. The values that it's an awful crime if the girl talks to another person, and the values are values not matter we are living in Amman or a small village.

yasmine's family have values that a small problem like girl talks to boy can be solve by another way not as her family want to kill her. We knew that When yasmen mother called her friend in organization to help women, and she want to write about it in the journal
“Well, I’m going right to my computer and write an article
about this ridiculous, horrible case and—”

The auther like that uncle Nabeel have to bring his honor back but she was disagree in the way he is thinking to return the honor (killing). So she finished the story in a peaceful way not by sawsan's killing .
This mean that she doesn't want some thing bad to occur in in order to solve the problem .

I think honor is important for every body especially for men, and every body must has his honor . If anyone think that he lose it, he should find a peaceful way to solve the problem but not by killing which is a traditional way and un useful way to face our problem in life. To solve this problem, maby we can let her marrty the man she love.

When Uncle Nabeel refers to his honor, he is talking about the honor of a girl in the family being chaste. He thinks that if a girl were unchaste in anyway that it destroys her family's honor and that she must be killed. This is apparent in the text from the plot and Uncle Nabeel's saying things like "Oh, my God, my God! What has she brought to us? Shame, shame, shame!" this shows that he feels what Sawsan has done is very disgraceful and affects the family as a whole. Uncle Nabeel says his honor has been "stained," "dirtied," and "destroyed" because his daughter was seen with another man other than her fiancé. He continues to say "I must restore my honor" which means he has to have Sawsan killed. When Wafa tells Yasmine about the problem she says, "It will ruin us," showing that she too believes Sawsan's actions will ruin the entire family's reputation.

Yasmine and her family don't agree with Uncle Nabeel's idea of honor and that a girl should be killed if she does something to subtract from this honor. We know this from several lines in the story. Yasmine thinks to herself, "How could these people think that way? It was so barbaric- so primitive!!" Her mother is also appalled to the idea calling it "atrocious, simply atrocious," and immediately wants to take action to help Sawsan and convince the community that honor killings are a part of the past. Yasmine also mentions that because of her father working as an importer-exporter he has "a more or less worldly view of things. Justice, Freedom, Democracy! Equal rights for everybody."

I believe the author is against Uncle Nabeel's decision to have Sawsan killed because most of the characters take actions to protect Sawsan. For instance Wafa's dad while agreeing that "Honor is essential" believes that they're living in different times and "it is not worth taking her life" Wafa also doesn't want her cousin killed and even tries to stand up against the two men who come to take Sawsan away. Also when Uncle Nabeel believes his daughter has been taken away to be killed he returns to his roam with a "wrenching groan" and sobs for the rest of the night. Another point that makes me believe that the author is against the idea is that in the end not only is Sawsan spared but she also has hope to reconcile with her family which we see from her letter.

As for my own opinion, I believe every person must handle the consequences of his or her own actions; thus, I don't think honor is a group thing where person A's actions can affect person B's honor. I believe it is wrong to do anything with another man once you have been promised to another, and if you are unhappy about that, you should have said so from the start. That doesn't mean I'm for a person getting killed for only holding hands with a man. I think in such a case the fiancé of the accused has the right to break off the marriage if he chooses, but that the accused shouldn't be physically punished for such a small thing because each person is an independent. If he or she is a religious person, he or she knows that there will be consequences in the end. On the other hand, I think people who commit adultery should be faced with the punishment that their religion decides for them if they willing choose that religion. For example I, as a Muslim, know what the punishments are for committing adultery and would accept them as thus if I committed adultery.

  11. HONOR by Elsa Marston

The values which Uncle Nabeel was talking about, religious values. But he was fanatic, he didn't understand the Koran correctly and thinking deeply of it. Also in this story, honor of the girl destroyed honor of the family, because she just talked and smiled with someone. As Uncle Nabeel said," My honor has been stained-dirtieted!" So he wanted to restore family's honor by killing.

Yasmine and her family carrying values , for example having freedom, justice and democracy. They were doing what they want to do without skipping the red line, and questioning them.
So that, they did not accept about what Uncle Nabeel wants to do and his decision about honor killing. Moreover, they wanted help Wafa's family to stop Sawsan's father to make a crime.

The auther absolutely disagree with Uncle Nabeel, first of all, because of the events and characters. No one wants to kill Sawsan, no one wants to be killer. In addition, the end of the story the writer chose Sawsan being saved which sent a message to her cousin Wafa. So the auther was against Uncle Nabeel's ideas.

Honor is one of the core values of Arab culture. In my opinion, kill someone is terrible thing, how it will be kill his daughter for the honor issue. I belive the man is not the GOD, God will punish the guilty.

  12. In Honor By Elsa Marston uncle Nabeel mentions to Wafa’s father that he is forgetting his values. In the story uncle Nabeel is talking about the cultural and religious beliefs of their place of origination, which is Beit es-Souf. In the religion of Islam and in Arabic cultural it is known that a woman must be chaste, otherwise she must be punished and killed to regain the honor of the family. It is the father’s responsibility to teach his daughters and authorize his sons to look over them and protect them for Example, uncle Nabeel made sure that Rasheed accompanied Sawsan everyday to school. In addition, “Beit es-Souf was notorious for its ultra-conservative, super-religious.” As a result, they grasp very strongly to these beliefs and do not make changes. The honor of a woman affects the whole family and can demolish their reputation for example, uncle Nabeel says, “My honor has been destroyed! What is a man without his honor? He is nothing, he is lower than a cockroach. He must have his honor, or he might as well die.” The following statement emphasizes how much these values mean to uncle Nabeel. The following values are very different from Yasmine’s family.
Yasmine’s family grasps values of democracy and human rights. They appreciate human life because they are completely against honor killings. Yasmine’s mother calls it "atrocious, simply atrocious," and Yasmine recalls that it is “barbaric and “primitive”. They adopted a western ideology and way of thinking for example, Yasmine’s mother says “You’re very fortunate to have the chance to build bridges and gradually help [Wafa] adapt, gain some self confidence, independent thinking”. She is encouraging self thinking and independence which is completely opposite of Wafa’s family.
Yasmine as well as her family believes in “freedom, […] equal rights for everybody.” They do not impose their ways of thinking or force anything on their children. These aspects are transferred to Yasmine as one observes when analyzing her conversation about the hijab. Yasmine believes a person’s character is more important than external appearance for example, when she says that “Being a good person comes from inside you, not outside.” (By saying outside she is specifically talking about wearing the hijab). She also believes that one should have their own thinking and choose what they want in life for example, when she says that wearing a veil is good if one believes in it and not forced into the matter.
The author appears to be against uncle Nabeel’s values because of the way she chose the events and the speakers in the story. The piece of work was written in two main points of views and both Yasmine and Wafa were against uncle Nabeel’s actions. It is self-evident that the author is against uncle Nabeel’s views because she makes Yasmine’s family announce attacking remarks against uncle Nabeel’s actions. In addition Wafa’s father was also against uncle Nabeel’s ideas for example, he says “Your daughter has behaved badly, and she must be punished. But it is not worth taking her life.” The author also chooses to end the story with Sawan being saved which sends a message that the problem can be solved with out an honor killing.
My values are somewhat similar to Yasmin’s family which is being completely against honor killings. I believe that it is a brutal and barbaric way to solve a problem because it elevates the conflict and results in more anguish and suffering for the family. I believe that it is wrong to commit adultery and one should be punished for it but in a less extreme manner which does not involve death or violence. The family of the women who has made a mistake should not be held responsible for her inappropriate actions. In addition, I believe that it is necessary to grasp on ones values but since we are in a changing society we must find a way to revolve by combining our values with the new innovative ideas and to channel this knowledge in the right direction.

  13. Uncle Nabeil has competing values. The first one, He loves his daughter Sawsan very much and do every things to make her happy. Secondly, he must protect his honor, which mean in our society that the honor of the man acetated with woman chastity. Uncle Nabeil in this story has to choose one of these solutions to keep his values: forgive his daughter and still love her, or kill her to keep his honor.
For Yasmin’s family, the top value in her family is freedom individual, everyone do anything he likes. They are not so relate to the religion as Uncle Nabeil's family because they lived in the west for many years; as result, they hold new values.
The writer disagree with Sawsan's father's values throw using another point of view in the story ,which appear throw Yasmine's family and their opinion in Sawsan case.
I disagree about this value of killing girl because they listen something from a young adult whitout listen to her.

  14. Uncle Nabeel was obviously talking about his honor and his traditional values, which he is highly connected with, and in a relevant with it. This holy or dear value to uncle Nabeel appears, when he makes his decision to kill his daughter, for just having a talk with a strange guy. And his refused to forgive her or to accept anther kind or type of punishment, that when his brother's wife said: "keep her at home—not to go out for anything!—for a few months, maybe even a year." But uncle Nabeel in his officer uniform was like a man, who is fighting to regains his lost respect, honor, dignity, and chasing to erase the shame that his daughter brought to him, when he said "I must restore my honor!.”

For Yassmine and her family, they have their own values, which are mainly concentrated on the human or the person freedom. She and her family refused the idea of the "honor killing", because they didn’t see what Sawsan had done from the same point if view to her father, they claim concentrated on rescue her, and protect her from her own family. When Yassmine's mother said: “I need the exact address. Street, building…" that just to rescue her.

It was obvious that the author was against the "honor killing", that because most of the characters are fighting to help Sawsan to survive. Her aunt, her uncle and his wife who try to persuade her father to not kill her but to punish her in anther way, also Wafa, and Yassmine family, all of them were supporting the idea that the author didn’t believe or accept the honor killing.

For me my opinion in a case like that depends on the situation. The world is changing and we too; for example, here in university I think many of us had a speech between guy and girl, whatever was the subject of the talk, so no one have the right to consider it as an honor case. But in a case that they "girl and boy' have a complete relationship, which can affected our morals, which of curse not expected, and of curse I refused. But in Sawsan case as I think she was forced to do that, because of her family. so the responsibly is on her family , because they even didn’t hear her opinion, or know what she want they were wanting money nothing more… money from her chosen husband, or her working when her father said to her mother" she would bring money."

  15. Uncle NABEEL was talking about many values in the story .for example honor, how should act with person who violates or falls against the honor so the story they talk about killing honor which they hold and the values represented in the story by uncle NABEEL how wanted to kill his daughter because she made usual thing in their tradition and .he don't want anyone to say 'you are wrong" and he is talk as a theory or something not to be debated.

all that is appearing in the story of honor, he always wanted from sawsan brother to take his sister to her job and come back for her .the mother and his brother give sawsan a solution when she made a mistake but UNCLE NABEEL retrograde nail make him decided that sawsan make a mistake and should be killed and he didn't want to discuses the other side.

all of the characters in the story where carrying values too, for example YASMEEN and her family ,but they were so different than UNCLE NABEEL .they are more democracy because who YASMEEN say she loves to be lathered up about social causes her family believes in equal rights for all and freedoms as the mentions in the novel .WAFA also doesn't want her cousin killed and even tries to stand up against the two people who come to take sawsan ,So I believe the author is against UNCLE NABEEL decision to have sawsan killed

in my opinion HONOR is Avery important issues in our society and should not kill because the religion will not allow to kill anyone and sometime something happened outside the will of the person .finally I want to say that the God give the life to the people so should be care it

  16. Uncle Nabeel is an example of a man who lives in the Arab world. Those Arab men jealous about there honor. All of them act as uncle Nabeel even maybe they themselves are talking with other girls. But when he saw his sister, mother, or his daughter, standing with some one he will be angry, and crazy about his honor. When uncle Nabeel said, "that Sawsan brought to him Shame". This situation shows me the frightening of honor issues that all people running to protect it from the monsters outside the home. These evil did not have hurt, so they hart the girls. For all these reasons, uncle Nabeel scared at his honor by planning to kill her. When Yasmeen heard this news from Wafa she disagreed with this, and she believes Sawsan's actions will ruin the entire family's reputation.

I think the acts of the theme shows me that they do not agree with killing Sawsan.

On my opinion, I think girls should believe on our religion, our culture. Thos who talk and laughed with you maybe hate you, and wanted to hart you. So since you are Muslim stick with it please!

  17. Uncle Nabeel is talking about the Honor in the story by relating the concept of the Honor with girl Honor of the family is the girl ,the girls is the Honor. If the girl doing anything dirtied the honor of her family then she must be killed. This appeared in many places in the story" My honor has been destroyed. What is a man without honor ? He must have his honor ,or he might as well die. I must restore my honor ."

Yasmine and her father and mother were disagree with the" Honor killing", especially Yasmine mother felt anger while Yasmine was telling her the story. The attitude of yasmine's family toward the story appeared clearly when they said that is "simply atrocious" , the country move into the 21 century ,and outlaw these crimes and really punish anyone who murder."

The position of the author regarding Uncle Nabeel's values. The writer used the point of view of many characters in the story to say in indirect way that she do not agree with the idea of "Honor killing" For example Am Rasheed tried to put a part of responsibility on Rasheed ,because he was the responsible of protecting his sister. Also wafa's father said "Yes, my brother ,you are right . Honor is essential. But we are living in the modern times . we are not living like a tribe in the desert, a hundred years ago . You can restore your honor in another way. Time will heal"

My personal opinion really the honor is a very hot issue ,but every one must teach how to deal with it. I see if anyone makes any thing dirtied the honor of his or her family must punish according to his or her religion .

  18. The values that uncle Nabeel is talking about in the story are cultural and religious values, which every family must hold forever without change. In the story the value that was discussed was honor. Every family honor is related to honor girls in Arab world. Uncle Nabeel's daughter Sawsan, breaks the rules when she was talking and smiling with a strange man. According to uncle Nabeel family honor was destroyed because of that. This explained what he said in the story "she is from an honorable family." "My honor has been destroyed! What is a man without his honor? He is nothing, as well die. I must restore my honor!" So, he decided to restore his honor by killing Sawsan.

Yasmeen's family lived in London for six months, so that they have free thoughts and have not fanatic values which uncle Nabeel holds. These things appeared in many cases in the story, such as Yasmeen's mother smokes cigarettes and she always takes care of her appearance. Yasmeen's family was different from uncle Nabeel's family. For example, Yasmeen does not cover her hair or dress the hijjab. In contrast, Sawsan and wafa' (her cousin) are covered their hair and dress the hijjab. When Yasmeen knew the story which happened with Sawsan from her friend wafa' and what uncle nabeel planned to restore his honor, she surprised and said: '' how could these people think that way? '' Then wafa' answered: ''that’s what you think, Yasmeen. That what people like you think.'' Yasmeen told her parents about Sawasan's case, so thet tried to help her. In conclusion, Yasmeen's family disagrees with '' honor killing'' issue.

The author obviously doesn't agree with uncle Nabeel because all the characters in the story don't want Sawsan to be killed. The author also appears that he disagree with uncle Nabeel's idea with '' killing honor'' gradually. First, when uncle Nabeel said that he will restore his honor. Second, when wafa' told the story to Yasmeen. Finally, when Yasmeen family helped Sawsan and saved her from killing by taking her to a safe place.

I am against '' honor killing'' because has the right to end any persons life; even in the holly Quran there is many verses that show us the punishment for any case. In our religion '' Islam '' only the killer must be killed.

  19. HONOR is a strong word that has a strong echo in our culture. It means the pure white dress that does not have any dirt.
The writer said that Uncle Nabeel is such a good man who follows s what that Holy Quraan says, and because he is such good, he wants to kill his daughter when she was seen in public with another man. The writer sees that this situation does not worth killing, but the white dress gets dirty and the chastity was scratched; the honor of the girl gets doubted in.
Uncle Nabeel sees this situation gives family a very huge shame that is not accepted by our religion or by our norms and values. But if we identify values: ideas that we hold dear, but not all values come from our religion, some of them were norms that people used to do in the ancient times, that are also did not come from our Islam.
So Uncle Nabeel (even he is a muslim) does not understand Islam well, nor does the writer. Uncle Nabeel should have known that the punishment of this situation is not Killing, it is a punishment with words, this is what our Islam says, but Nabeel focuses on values when he said: “No, my brother!” Uncle Nabeel broke in. “You have been inthis city too long—it has corrupted you. You’re forgetting your values, the values of our family, our people. Some things must never change. This world is changing too fast for us, so we must hold on to those things tighter than ever. Above all we must have honor— and I must have my honor! I know what I must do, and you know, and that’s all there is to it. Finish!” He did not mention how our Islam, and our Quraan tell us how to deal with this situation.

“Show me in the Koran where it says I have to cover all my hair,” I said. “Show me where the Koran—not some old male-chauvinist
shaykh—says that women have to cover their hair. Let alone their faces! Yeeeh! If women have to cover themselves in order to be good Muslims, men should, too. They’re uglier, anyway.” Of curse our Quraan says that all women muat cover their hair "وليضربن بخمورهن على جيو بهن"
Finally, this story is a big example of how people do not fully understand Islam although they are Arabs, and this is the main reason that the wests don’t understand it either.
There is a very famous speech for our prophet about the misunderstanding of God’s limits: "The example of those who maintain Allah's limits (hudood) and those who surpass them is like the example of those who share a boat. Some would occupy its upper deck and some its lower deck. The occupants of the lower deck would have to go to the upper deck to have access to the water. If they said, why don't we drill a hole in our part (to directly access the water) and do not cause any inconvenience to those above us. If those on the upper deck let them do what they wanted then all of the passengers would sink. However, if they prevented them from doing so then all would be saved.”
This outlook to the community and the individual establishes a distinct concept about society. The individuals as part of the community must have thoughts that bind them together and by which they live. They must also share the same emotions by which they are influenced and they proceed according to them.
Additionally, they must have one system to address all of their life's problems.

  20. 1.What values uncle Nabeel is talking about?.

In the story" Honor", which has been written by Elsa Marston, Uncle Nabeel has talked about many values, norms, tradition and customs.
He was a conservative, traditional, extremist, exaggerated and excessive in his judgment, sophisticated and religious man.
He has raised on some values which he believe in it and he always wants to apply it in his house, these values was taken from Islamic rules like honor, faithfulness and dignity.
He dealt with his daughter’s mistakes as a "taboo" thing which inexcusable, so he decided to kill her without any mercifulness and without listening to anybody because of being right in his belief, behavior, faith and thought.
I noticed that when he asked from Rasheed to bring along his daughter to her job and to bring her back to the house, but when Sawsan made her mistake, he determined to kill her and he justified that she broke the rules, and so he took his decision by himself without sharing anybody. This apparent, when Uncle Nabeel said "Oh, my God, my God! What has she brought to us? Shame, shame, shame!" and he also said that, his honor has been stained and demolished when her daughter has seen with a person, and he said," I must restore my honor."

2.What values do Yasmine and her family hold? How do you know?

Yasmeen's family has also values, but it was different from Uncle Nabeel’s values. They were democratic and free in expressing about their thoughts, point of views and talks comfortably, safety and peacefully. They were sharing each other and they were also caring of humans' life even if they made mistakes. They were talking simply without fearfulness or hesitation. They knew the Islamic rules, but they dealt with in wisdom. I noticed that through the mother who was caring of Sawsan’s life by writing in journals, and the father who was worried about what might be happened, and Yasmeen who was so scaring about her friend, "Wafa", and her family and from their way in solving the problem when Yasmeen told them about Sawsan’s story.

What is the position of the author regarding uncle Nabeel's value?

I think the author was against Uncle Nabeel's values because she has shown us the negative sides in his character more than the positive ones. She talked about many bad things about uncle Nabeel so as to hate him the readers through some qualities which mentioned about him like conserved, sophisticated, unfair, controller, hard and merciless. She justified that through talking about how can he kill his teenager daughter for a small fault or mistake? She completely didn’t support uncle Nabeel because if she supports him, she will make the girl die at the end of the story but she didn’t want that.

    4. What are your own values regarding the issue of honor killing?

I'm absolutely decline the idea of murder because I think that killing in that way, in that thought and in that situation is trifle, immoral, out of date and not suitable for us as Muslims. Man is not God. He hasn’t the right to take away what it cannot restore when it want to.

  21. Honor is a great word and it holds many different meaning. As a Muslim person, Koran and our prophet Mohamad [ صلى الله عليه وسلم gave us the main meaning of it.
Although this word have one meaning in all the religion that Allah gave what ever was this religion Islam,Christ, and jwish but it have a different meaning among the cultures.

The honor in the story was jaundiced by Uncle Nabeel's perspective and
Yasmin's family perspective which is the narrater perspective. Uncle Nabeel said that his honor had destroyed because a group of strangers told him that they had seen his daughter with someone no matter if they are honest or not. Although Uncle Nabeel is a good muslim as the narrater said but his point of view was against his religion and against what Allah and Mohamad say. And this a proof that Uncle Nabeel is far away from his religion and convinced only with the idea that he hold in his mind without return to what the koran and Mohamad say. And these norms that poeple hold from their grandfathers where the misunderstanding for Islam come from and also it give the westren people a bad look for Islam and Muslim people.

In addition, The soluation that the narrater created for Sawsan's case was wrong. Because in this case takeing her away from family because they want to kill her in order to have their honor back is not a soluation. Maybe if wafaa told shiekh who is not chauvinist as the narrater say and put him in a low place although he does not have the right to say this a bout him. Al shiekh will of course help them and show them the right way to treat their daughter by sitting with their daughter and let her understand her fault and teach her the right things in a right way because kill her is against our religion and even leave her in a privet room. In my opinion the narrater created this soluation because he did not give an example of a good muslim and maybe because he is from another religion and does not have a complete image a bout what the Islam is a bout.

Me as a muslim person have a different idea from Uncle Nabeel's idea and the narrater's idea. The honor for me is represent every thing good such as high fidelity, to be honest, to wear Al-hijab,to obay myPerants, and the most important thing to obay Allah and his prophet Mohamad because their teaching is the perfect thing to learn and it will help me to have a perfect life now, later, and for ever.

  22. Honor story is a story from Jordan, which had written by Elesa Marston. This story includes many values which differs from person to another. First, Uncle Nbeel who is Sawsan's father holds a very common value, which is the honor. He talks about it that the honor of the man is relevant with the chastety of the women in his family. He also wants to put all the women in the family under his control. And these values are the most common oned in the Arab world.
Yasmine and her family have mare freedom, but it is limited ana not open. They still have Arabian values like Uncle Nbeel, but it is in a modern form. That is when Yasmine told her parents about Sawsan's problem, as they tried to help her to be safe.
Finally, ''The Honor Killing'' . We as muslems do not have any opinion of Honor Killing, because our Islamic culture came with rules. And these rules we must accept it and we cannot agree or disagree. Also, this issues and problems that related to the honor specially in our culture do not have any sollution instead of the killing.

  23. In “Honor” by Elsa Marton uncle Nabeel talks about values which he understands them un correctly, he has the wrong meaning of the Quran and Islam, for example; in honor issue he will kill any one without thinking in his family, so in his mind Sawsan brought the shame to the family, she must be killed to restore the honor.

Yasmen’s family holds values about freedom, justice, and democratic, every one have rights, thus Yasmen thinks that the killing is something wrong to do with Sawsan, because she does not do anything to be shamed as uncle Nabeel says, Sawsan seems that is a scared thing, crazy, and wrong, she thinks to herself, "How could these people think that way?".

I think the author disagree with Sawsan’s family, because he starts the story from Yasmen’s family values, he makes their beliefs clear, and make Sawsan’s family against the uncle, they don not want kill her, although they seem the behave she does is wrong, will ruin them, and take honor away, but the killing is not the correct.

In my opinion, I think honor is something important, but the way that Sawsan’s family take is wrong, when the uncle make Rasheed escort her sister to the work, that stress her out, and stimulate her to do what she does, so I disagree

  24. Honor is a story from Jordan written by Elsa Marston, the story talk about different valus that the people carry and believe and that appear from talking about uncle Nabeel family and Yasmen family. Uncle Nabeel has many valus according to the Koran and he behaves and thinks by related to this valus, also he has a special valus about the girl honor and he thinks that if the girl was unchaste, she must be killed, and he said that when he decided to kill Sawsan
Yasmeen family has different values, its democratic family believes that the freedom is a very important thing and they resolve the problems in a different ways from uncle Babeel ways. For example Yasmeed does not wear AL-Hijab,because she thinks that the belief comes from our heart not from our looks.
I think that the author against uncle Nabeel, because he made the characters refuse the killing ,and in my opinion the life is the most important thing that we have and we don't have the right to take the life of others for a simply reason, for example in this story Sawsan did not do a great thing and she must kill as a result of it, and we should think with our minds and hearts and don't allow the stubbornness to lead us.
