My favorite story from the three excerpts we read for class was the second one, "Number One Son" by Monfoon Leong. The main reason I liked it most is because it has to do with Chinese culture and customs. Ever since I was in elementary school, I enjoyed learning about anything Chinese or Japanese: the silk kimonos, the origami, the foot binding, the chopsticks, and anything else Asian. In "Number One Son", Ming becomes the man of the house, and even his mother has to obey him. That's extremely different compared to American culture where kids are expected to obey their parents; also, in Islamic culture mothers are suppose to be respected not treated as inferior to their own offspring. Not only does it differ from the fact that in most cultures mothers rank higher than sons, children in most societies aren't expected to have so much responsibility. A nice thing that the excerpt shines a light on is how the Chinese respect the elders. Ming calls Grandfather Choak "Grandfather" because he is elderly and comes from his mother's village; this respect is similar to the respect Islam asks of Muslims to have for the elderly.
Why I found Ceremony was the best?
ReplyDeleteThrough reading it I understand that this part of reading discussed two main ideas:1- Racism (racial discrimination between Indians native inhabitants and European), this picture
didn’t show clearly through the events of Ceremony ,but there was a small signal indicate on it . When the commander said to Rocky and Tayo "Anyone can fight for America" "even you boys"p.28
Another idea was how the Indian culture and its landmarks effected by the European culture, also how this thing helped on bluer and eras the features of Indian civilization.
This is called on secular. Many people said that if you want to influence on any state all over the world you can achieve that through the idea of Orientals on its culture and civilization.
The idea of secular appeared in several aspects of the story; every thing in Indian culture has two names Indian name and European name.
Second , addressing the issue of community with religion. Every person must live alone , take responsibility for his mistakes not all the clang being responsible about his mistakes, on the same way it learn him preferred his interests on the other interests .Third contributed the community members to depart from familiar. For example, woman in Indian community should give her attention to her family ,(she saw herself through her family ),but when European culture entered inside Indian community it encouraged the woman to interest more about her self , even this require in some times to be selfish.
Finally, I must say that the wrong doesn’t relate in secular and Orientals, the weak relates to the community and the people who they live inside it. Who they must select, determined what needs to be taken from the other culture and what they must not. They assume the greater responsibility for being in this situation.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite excerpt that I have chosen through my reading is “Last Jump”. One of the main reasons I liked it most is the IRONY that happened several times in the story. From the beginning, when I read the title I thought that someone is going to jump from some place, and the jump is going to be interesting, and he will remember it all his life. But when I read the story carefully, and imagine, his movement, his feeling, thoughts, all attracted me in a strong way that made me do not want to put the book down,even my little baby did not cry as usual because i think i was in a good mood. This is in my opinion the good literature.
I choose the first one which is last jump. It has a lot of sensory images. Such as, sight, smell, touch, taste, hearing. All these sight helped me to imagine the accident. All these lead my brain to the middle of it. I read how welcome fall and how his friend helped him, how ever he did not like him. That is taught me helping other people did not need or wait for them to love you. You just do what god told you to do. For me I help the other just I like to do good things for them. If I wait for the other people to love or to help me I'd never help them, so I will do like Riley. As we say: "do a favor and through it on the sea. It is mean If want to help the other don not wait for them to say thanks to you.

ReplyDeleteI had read the three stories: Last Jump, Number One Son, and Ceremony. After that I saw that the story of ceremony enjoyed me more than the other ones, because it tell us about how parents can cause a lot of suffering to their sons; for example, when Tayo's mother left him, and how she behaved wrong and did wrong relationships against the values of her society, and despite the fact that she was an Indian girl. Also she had broken the rules and values in addition to make wrong relationships with white, and in the end she left her son and went a way with out news, and she brought shame to her family, but in our culture the woman who do this will be unacceptable.

ReplyDeleteFirst of all, this story was easy to read and understand. Moreover, It reveal beautiful thing that how fathers love their sons and that appeared when the father decided to give his gold watch to his son after his death. In addition, the story explained how the poor people live in hard cases and that clear in the story because the family live hardly and need money, so the old son decided to leave school and work for his family. Finally, the story show the greediness of rich people when the man refused to give the gold watch to Ming at the beginning.
My favorite story
ReplyDeleteI prefer the second story (number one son), because this story very funny, so this story talked about son, who became the head of his family, after his father died. After that, this story showed the situation of this son and his family.
And I chose the second story, because this story very easy to reading, and there are a new words dive us a new information, we don’t know. And this story used simple sentences to understand.
Furthermore, this story interrogated the situation after father died. And how the big son who will lead his family to good live…
My Favorite Story
ReplyDeleteI liked the second story which called Number One Son, because it was interesting. I liked the main character which was Ming, the young boy who was thinking about his future after his father death. He was worried about his life, but on the other hand he cares about his family. Ming was thinking in a normal way that any one can think, did his father loved him so Ming will take his place?! Actually, at the first of the story, I thought as Ming that his father didn’t like him and he was cruel, but at the end that was wrong and he was good with him. Ming decided to be the head of the family and that was the right.
I loved the story more than the other two stories, because it's happening too much in cultures. Many young people lose there future and life, because of the family provider death. Ming was acting well, because he didn’t want to lose his future or his family.

I prefer the second one (number one son), because it talks about a social issue, which could happened any time and any where. When the dad die and his first son should become the leader instead of his father, so I found it easy to understand, because we have many such stories in our Arab societies, and we noticed that happened with Ming, after the death of his father he had his father duties, and that what happened with many of the guys here.
My favorite story is "Number One Son". I think it was very interesting and it makes me feel sorry for Ming. The story showed us many kinds of Chinese culture. Also it shows different kinds of people and their opinion a bout what was good a bout Ming's father and what was not good. Their opinions have many effects on Ming which made him though that his father was a bad man. Also the story shows example of the Chinese women which was Ming's mother. The kind of women who had to take care of her children and make them happy even she is not. Also the story shows how Chinese teach their children to respect elder' people. I think this was what I liked it a bout it and it is really very interesting story to read.
ReplyDeleteFor me i like Number One Son story than more the other stories, because i think it's can happen in our life (closer to reality), and it make us descovering the cultural background specially the chinese culture, and also the story teach us not to judge for someone because maybe we will suddenly surprice in this person, and I think it's interesting how the boy left the school and take the responsibility for his family
ReplyDeleteMy favorite's story was" Number One Son" by Monfoon Leong, which I found it the most interesting one, because the events were attracted me very much, I found as I thought the internal conflict, which was in Ming soul, that if his father really loved him and his family or not, or did his father worth that Ming give his future and life to help his family after his father death letting nothing to help them in their life, but when he found the secret real love from his father not in a gift "watch", but in feeling, he found that there was a love that he was desperately need, and he lost it and now he found it, and he is very happy to have it.

ReplyDeleteI like this story because it is talks about a habit which is not only for Chinese culture but also it's occurring in the Palestinian community, so it's clause to our culture. In this story the father of a family died and his son (old son) should be as a father and he should be the leader of the family. Ming the main character in the storey was a child, so he can't be a leader to the family which consists of five persons. Ming thinks that his father is careless, and he doesn't love his family but in the end Ming discover that his father is a great person and he love the family. Some things like this occur not only Ming but also in our culture.

ReplyDeleteIt talks about Chinese culture which is close to Palestenian culture, so the story is easy to understand; in addition, it was interesting, especially; at the beginning of the story I thought that Ming's father hate his son who is the oldest son, because he left him alone without any help. In fact, his father loves him so much, and Ming knows that when he wore his father's watch and read what was written in the cover of it; therefore, Ming becomes the head of the family.
I liked number one son story because it shows that male or man is responsible on every thing that include his life, future and his family. He must do better thing to his family incase a father travelled or died despite of exist girls in the family, that appeared during this story when Ming decided to work and study at the same time when his father died. In addition, he refused asked his mother that she wanted to work in order to earn money.

For example, when Ming knew that his father quitted golden o’clock for him and Ming had read inside cover of the o’clock that his father wrote to his son: “ For Ming, my son” this sentence made Ming felt sadness and confused. Third reason, Number One Son story transfer a special massage to readers that a truth will not hide one day. That was clear and obvious when many people talked to Ming that his father was tough person, not attend or give his children any love,in addition, some people said to Ming that his father was careless and lazy person. But he discover that his father was tender person and he helped a woman and her kids . Last reason, As I think, although big gap(differences) between Chinese-American and Arab world, both of them get together by controlled and responsibility the man on the family.
The story of "Monfoon Leong" Number One Son is the best. I can tell that it is the best because the writer used simple language and his ideas are connected to each other. He used the style of contradiction and surprise when we thought at the beginning of the story that his father didn't like him, and he didn't leave anything to him and his family. But in the end of the story, the truth emerged and surprise that his father loved him because he left him a valuable gold watch. I liked that interesting style in the story, so that I couldn't leave the story even for a minute just to know if his father loved him or not.

My favorite selection from the free was "My Number One Sun". I choose it because of many reasons one of them was when I finished reading all of three selections I found it as the most familiar one for me, because I heard real story that similar to it, and i saw a serial story. Also this story we can found it all over the world not only in Chinese, Palestinian cultures.

He was think that his father did not love him, because he lift him alone, but he surprised when his mother said to him that his father left "a golden watch" for him. I want to say that when his father did not want to leave him alone because he did not love him, he left him alone to be strong and to make him learn how to be independent, and to be ready to become the head of the family any time.
In the end I want to say that this story "My Number One Sun" was really an attractive story, with easiest word than the other stories,and i found it very easy to understand and I like it very much.
For me, Iloved the three stories, but my favorite one is the "Last Jump"becouse it has more images, which help us to understand the theme of the story, than the other stories. In addition, it is full of action, suspense, and stress; for example, we don't know until the end if Welcome will die or still survived. Also Riley attitude was unexpected. The end of the story surprised me. Morever, the irony of this story attracted me as I said before about riley attitude. Finally, I think this story has alot of difficult word; I spend more time throw reading this story than the other, but at the end I found it the most interesting one of these stories.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the following excerpt I was most drawn towards the last story, Ceremony by Leslie Marmon Silko. During my school years I learned about the Native American culture and enjoyed learning their history and cultural ways. I read this excerpt with interest and anticipation wanting to know more about Tayo's past.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed how the author delivered information about Tayo's mother step by step, which developed suspense. I appreciated the fact that the story concentrated on social problems and racisms in the American culture, for example, how the Americans looked at the natives in a negative way.
While reading, I developed many feelings of sadness and hope towards the Native American Families. I felt compassion for Tayo, because his mother left him when he was four years old. In contrast, I felt hope because of the way the two brothers treated each other with compaction. The irony of how Laura treated her nephew was a mystery and I was drawn to understand the story behind her uncompassionate ways. This excerpt made me question our culture and if people have hidden dark secrets as well. I came to a conclusion that anyone in a conservative culture must have. The mixture of emotions I developed while reading this story is the main reason why I enjoyed it the best. Overall, I was drawn to the central theme of brotherhood and how people should grasp to their culture like Tayo's family trying to grasp on their Native American culture.
My favorite story from the three excerpts we read for class was the second one, "Number One Son" by Monfoon Leong. The main reason I liked it most is because the story reflects the social reality of the family is experiencing the death of the parents has been faced with the oldest son in an internal conflict because he holds responsibility of the family.

ReplyDeleteI enjoy it because it gives us a good theme. First, don't judge someone you don't know his emotion toward you. Second, you have to look in the situation more deeply. In this story, we can recognize it through Ming's judgment to his death father. Ming didn't love his father or believe that his father loved him. Ming's father didn't show his children his real emotion toward them. This treatment came because of the hard life they lived.
Ming thought the love come only through giving gifts or showing his real emotion for the person you love.
The most interesting story, is the second one (Number One Son), I enjoyed reading it because it is easy to understand, it makes events really happened.
ReplyDeleteThe main character in this story, who is Ming, reflects reality in our life, this young boy who will live a life imposed on him, he will be the boss of the family, and he is very young to do that, this events make me eager to know what will happened to the boy, who think that his father did not love him, and he died to give him a heavy load to carry, but the boy will know in the future that his father love him so much.
When i read the story of number one son i found it real, it's drown from the Arabic culture.Where the first son in the family can replace his father when he's absent or dead .even in his present he treated as the head of the family and taks the responsibilities of his family although he is child as Ming when he obliges to leave his school and work instead,despite he is a child assumed to play,study and dream,but he coerce to work because his his father dead and there is no income to the family ,so he decided to work instead of studying .

all of the characters in the story where carring values too,for example YASMEEN and her family ,but they were so diffeent than UNCLE NABEEL .they are more democracy because who YASMEEN say she loves to be lathered up about social causes her family believes in equal rights for all and freedoms as the mentions in the novel .WAFA also dosent want her cousin killed and even tries to stand up against the two people who come to take sawsan ,So i believe the author is againt UNCLE NABEEL decision to have sawsan killed
in my opinion HONOR is avery important issues in our society and should not kill because the religion will not allow to kill anyone and sometime something happened outside the will of the person .finally i want to say that the God give the life to the people so should be care it
In “Honor” by Elsa Marton uncle Nabeel talks about values which he understands them un correctly, he has the wrong meaning of the Quran and Islam, for example; in honor issue he will kill any one without thinking in his family, so in his mind Sawsan brought the shame to the family, she must be killed to restore the honor.
ReplyDeleteYasmen’s family holds values about freedom, justice, and democratic, every one have rights, thus Yasmen thinks that the killing is something wrong to do with Sawsan, because she does not do anything to be shamed as uncle Nabeel says, Sawsan seems that is a scared thing, crazy, and wrong, she thinks to herself, "How could these people think that way?.
I think the author disagree with Sawsan’s family, because he starts the story from Yasmen’s family values, he makes their beliefs clear, and make Sawsan’s family against the uncle, they don not want kill her, although they seem the behave she does is wrong, will ruin them, and take honor away, but the killing is not the correct.
In my opinion, I think honor is something important, but the way that Sawsan’s family take is wrong, when the uncle make Rasheed escort her sister to the work, that stress her out, and stimulate her to do what she does, so I disagree

ReplyDeleteI fond the second story (number one son),for many reasons as: He could manage and solve his family’s problems and he was responsible for earning some money to spend them on his family as he become the head of the family, he will work day and night so as to let them live comfortably and safety. Also he chose to work and help his family and this is was a good idea. Why I like this story because it related on what has happened with my relative for two years, Who left his study after his father’s death, so he was suffering from many psychological and financial problem because of caring of his mother and his daughter
I had read the three stories, but I found that the story of"Number One Son" enjoyed me more than the other ones because it talks about something real and happens in the life frequently when the father dead and the older son has to decide to stay and help his family or to leave them and care about his business just , in this story the son become confused and in the beginning he thought that his father did not love him and he dead and left the heavy loads in his back,but after he discover that his father lift a watch to show his son that he loved himand he changed his mind
